Guys have no flirting idea

Women who batted an eyelid, or exchanged a cheeky smile were wasting their time, researchers at Indiana University said.

Apart from pouncing on the object of her affection, there was not a lot a woman could do to subtly declare her interest, according to the study, to appear in the journal, Psychological Science.

"Young men just find it to tell the difference between women who are being friendly and women who are interested in something more", said lead researcher Coreen Farris.

According to a survey a college students, 70 per cent of women said they had experience a situation where a guy had either mistaken her friendliness for sexual interest, or not picked up on her sexual signals.

The students in turn were shown images of women's faces on a computer screen and asked to categorize them into either friendly, sexually interested, sad or rejecting.

Overall, women categorized more images correctly than men did.

And men were particularly confused by the photos which showed friendly and amorous women. They were more likely to interpret the alluring faces as friendly and they thought the friendly faces were conveying sexual interest.
