Madonna in tune as mum to Lourdes
Madonna, who is obviously the more dominant of the two, leads Lourdes, holding her hand, with her confident stride and right arm placed over Lourdes to steer the way and provide reassurance.
Like a lioness protecting her cub, Madonna’s confrontational, front-on, open-mouth stare and firm punch-like grip on her bag sends out a challenge and says ‘‘stay away’’. In comparison to Madonna’s open, confident stance, Lourdes is moreguarded, using her laptop and coat pulled over her chest as a partial
barrier to provide comfort.
Her small, hesitant steps and gait that falls slightly behind Madonna tell us that she’s feeling insecure. Whereas Madonna looks at the cameras straight on, Lourdes looks away.
Lourdes may be growing up before our eyes and has already developed her own sense of style, but she’s still very much mummy’s little girl. Her twisted torso and firm grip on
Madonna’s hand are her body’s subconscious attempt to get closer
and seek protection.
There’s no denying the bond between mother and daughter, and while the rebellious teenage years might only be a blink of an eye away, for the moment Lourdes is happy to follow in her mother’s footsteps.
